Hatha Yoga Shala – East Bay
John Mora just finished work on my new yoga studio, and I could not be more pleased with the result. His attention to detail, and very high standards were evident in every aspect of the job from start to finish. On top of that, he was a pleasure to work with – excellent communication and very responsive to every question, concern, and challenge that sprung up. I have worked with quite a few people in the construction industry, and John stands out there at the top. I strongly recommend him.
A kitchen remodel can be a nightmare, but working with John Mora and his crew was a dream! Aside from John himself being professional, reliable and capable, the crew he assigned to work in my home exhibited the same characteristics. The work was completed on time, on budget, and was very well done. I couldn’t be happier with the way things worked out. At the beginning of the project, we literally had to go back to the drawing board due to some problems with the existing construction that weren’t revealed until the demolition had started — but the changes didn’t throw John off at all. At one point he even accompanied me to City Hall to facilitate the changes that had to be made to the building permit. In fact, the kitchen remodel went so well, that I had him come back to redo my home office space. I feel that I can recommend JBM Construction without reservation.
We were fortunate to have had a friend recommend the contractor services of John Mora, JBM Construction. Over the past year, John and his crew have done several projects for us including: repairing external and internal rot caused by leaking downspouts; installing beautiful new windows and repairing rot caused by water that leaked through the old ones; opening up (and later closing and refinishing) the ceiling to put in insulation and recessed lighting; and other little stuff, too, like hanging a new interior glass door.
In addition to his excellent work and reliable team, John provides genuine caring and calmness to every project. He helped us stay within our budget by telling us what we could do ourselves. John and his crew truly care about getting the job done right, and obviously take a lot of pride in their workmanship. John is just a truly lovely person and great to work with.
For another testimonial of sorts, check out the reviews for the cafe Local 123 in Berkeley. Notice how many people praise the space. John and his crew are responsible for that work, too. He had mentioned that he had done a job there and I checked it out for myself. It really is well done.
We feel very fortunate to have had John and his crew work on my house.
As anyone who’s survived a large construction project knows, having your dream project turned into reality has multiple challenges — like unanticipated costs and building inspections that don’t always turn out the way you had hoped. For many of my colleagues, those projects also have “evil contractors” associated with them unfortunately. John Mora of JBM Construction runs a very different construction company. He was extremely good at estimating costs up front, looked for ways to save me money during the project (even if it meant that he made less), and he challenged some of my ideas if he thought they added unnecessary expenses. And when unanticipated problems arose – as they did in our old building – he was very careful to determine our options and outline the pros and cons of each. He managed all of his subcontractors very well and followed through on everything he committed to. He’s also fun to work with! I wholeheartedly recommend John and would select him for future projects of mine in a heartbeat.
I was very pleased with JBM Construction. The quote was reasonable. The job (siding replacement) was carried out professionally and correctly. Also, importantly, they were considerate and willing to work with my concerns and what I wanted.
First, Fran and I want to thank you for all your help on our somewhat erratic project. Your calmness and helpful suggestions as we peppered you with questions was much appreciated. And since the paint job is now finished, we know it looks great and are very happy with the results.
John Mora worked on our home for about 6 weeks in 2010. During that time, my wife and I found him to be considerate, thoughtful, responsible, and honest. He takes pride in his work and does a thorough job. John has a variety of skills and has many years of experience on all sorts of jobs from commercial buildings to private residences. His fees are also fair and reasonable. Also John is smart: he makes sure his assistants are also efficient, trustworthy, and take pride in their work.
We trust John, would hire him again, and highly recommend him.
John Mora has worked for a broad range of our clients over the years, both commercial and residential. He is a rare contractor, one who knows how to listen as well as talk, one who shows real concern for all the client’s needs. He and his partner take (justified) pride in the quality of their work.
In addition to numerous projects for our clients, John and Vince worked on my own house. I would hire them again in a heartbeat.
To whom it may concern,
I have had the privilege of working with John Mora for the past 10 years. John has built numerous projects for us from the renovation/remodel of a 2 story 9,000 sq. ft. mix use building on the corner of 40th Street and MLK in Oakland to multiple cafes, residential additions, and remodels.
John is a conscientious and economical quality builder. He is able to provide accurate cost estimates, project schedules, and contributes his building knowledge when working out the construction process (e.g. material specifications and details) that are time sensitive and cost appropriate. John believes in quality and providing clients with honest, courteous and value added service.
Each time when we were determining a list of possible contractors for a limited tight construction budget on either a café or residential addition/remodel, John’s name was always one of the first mentioned. Together we have built numerous
successful projects and had very satisfied clients. I always knew John would execute the construction drawings as intended and stay true to the design.
We as architects can recommend a contractor, but it is the relationship between the client and contractor that speaks of success. John has proven that he listens to and supports the clients individual needs in accomplishing each specific project, time and time again.
WINDOWS, DOORS, DECK
My husband and I had recently bought an old house that needed a lot of work. We planned to take our time to fix all that needed to be updated because a lot of the issues, we were told, were not urgent. However, during our first winter in the house, we quickly realized that the old aluminum windows rattled, and were not providing any insulation, they might as well have been missing! We also had extensive dry rot from the leaking windows which was damaging the inside of the wall and the oak floors in the living room. Furthermore, our deck, which was original to the house, was on it’s last legs and full of termites. My husband and I decided that we needed to replace the windows before the next winter, and the deck was a safety hazard.
We began interviewing construction companies and taking bids. We interviewed a lot of contractors and John Mora of JBM construction impressed us the most. He was very conscientious, meticulous and concerned about doing it the right way the first time around. Needless to say, we decided to hire him, and we found him to be exactly what we thought he was. John was easy to work with, flexible, and very good at responding to my questions and concerns. We are very pleased with the outcome. We now have new, beautiful wood double paned windows that look original to our house, and we have a safe and well constructed deck to enjoy our wonderful view. We are very thankful to John and his crew for making it an easy and stress free process!
LOCAL 123 (now Highwire Cafe)
John brings the highest level of professionalism, respect, sense of humor and creativity to every aspect of his work. It was clear after walking through the space with him and one of his like-minded and talented subcontractors the first time, that this is someone who can communicate clearly and act honestly. John possesses that rare mix of humility, efficiency and capability – not to mention punctuality, frugality and quality!
While he came to the project with the reputation of providing the most conservative and accurate estimates, we remained optimistically skeptical after everyone had warned us that we’d inevitably exceed costs by 25-50% of the proposed budget. But JBM really delivered, ultimately working around an ever-shrinking budget – what with city permits and other costs exceeding initial projections – and maintaining his infectious, “can-do” attitude throughout.
One of the things I appreciate most about John and the subs he handpicks to work with is his determination to find the best working solution to every challenge. He’d rather take the extra hour to research the best price and quality product than make a rash decision anyone might regret. That said, John is a master of working under pressure and coming up with creative solutions on his own and as a team for any number of stressful conflicts that can arise during the course of construction. He acts with integrity and grace, always remaining calm and focused.
Our employees all know and love John, a welcome friend at the café and still the guy we’d trust to put out a fire. I have eagerly recommended JBM to fellow business owners and friends, who have rivaled Local 123 in their enthusiasm for John and satisfaction with his work, and look forward to making the connection again for others.
We certainly know who we’re calling for Location #2!
To whom it may concern,
Last year we embarked on a major building renovation for our company, Metro Lighting. The scope included the conversion a 6500 square foot concrete shell into our retail lighting showroom, office, manufacturing and support spaces, along with a voluntary seismic upgrade and facade renovation. After receiving bids from four general contractors, we chose to work with John Mora of JBM Construction.
Along with a very competitive price, John came highly recommended by our architect, Charles Kahn and the owners of a nearby cafe, Local 123, recently renovated by JBM. We have found that most clients are happy with their contractors at the start of their projects. The fact that the owners of Local 123 were positively thrilled with JBM at the end of their project was greatly influential. After completing our project, we are equally eager to recommend JBM to future clients.
John managed the construction process in a professional manner, working to keep the project within our budget and timeline. Even with the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, a delay from PG&E, and some changes to the scope, we were able to finish the project within six months. Throughout the process, we were impressed with John’s direct communication and the respect he showed to everyone associated with the project. He was always available to answer questions, and had a good rapport with all of his subs, many with whom he has worked with for decades.
We both have backgrounds in architecture, so we chose to have Kahn Design Associates prepare a minimal set of plans for our building permit, knowing there would be many design details to be clarified in the field. We had a limited budget, and were willing to put in some sweat equity to stretch our funds and allow for some higher end materials. John was flexible, patient and informative as we worked through numerous options.
Now that Metro Lighting has moved into our new “home,” we couldn’t be happier with the results. Every day we come to work, we appreciate the beauty of the design and the care taken by JBM to make this dream a reality. We would not hesitate to recommend John Mora and JBM Construction.

HIVE CAFE Oakland
We are the owners of a new cafe in Oakland and used John to build it from the ground up. We cannot say enough to give John the credit he deserves for his dedication, patience and overall positive and beaming personality. He has immeasurable experience with cafes and has the right amount of hope and caution, which kept our project going, even in the hardest times. We are so very lucky to have used him and his team as our contractor and a couple of months after we opened our cafe we could not be more happy with our choice!
Awaken Café Downtown Oakland
John Mora and JBM Construction are the real deal. Professional, highly skilled, reliable, kind, and most important in a contractor: strong finishers. JBM built our cafe in downtown Oakland (awakencafe.com) and we were delighted with all parts of the process. They are experienced with all aspects of a commercial restaurant/cafe project which saves time and money. They finished on time and on budget. Their subs were professional and talented as well. Mr. Mora is a clear and strong communicator, easy to reach on the phone, by text, and by email, and knows his business. JBM comes highly recommended.
Eye Love Optometry Pinole
John Mora and associates built our brand-new, modern optometric practice in Pinole, CA, exactly to specifications, from the ground up in an extremely short time frame, in order to meet our deadline. Not only was he always on schedule, he was always on budget, so there were never any unexpected surprises. Consistently professional, organized, trustworthy, and simply a great guy in general, he was always there to make sure personally that everything was done right. I would recommend him to anyone, any day.
KITCHEN/BATH REMODEL Oakland
John Mora remodeled our kitchen this summer. He is a talented contractor with a sense of what will work best in your space. I’ve never worked with anyone before who came in on schedule like John, using permits when necessary. Everything came out so well, including the custom built cabinets.. John is great guy to work with, so responsive to all your questions and concerns and his prices are great as well. Will definitely be using him again!
ANCIENT ORGANICS Berkeley
John Mora of JBM Construction was able to take my modest commercial kitchen build out and create a masterpiece. I have worked with many contractors in the past and John stands head and shoulders above them all with his work ethic, ability to maximize a budget and skillful means of effective communication. John created an environment of expedient construction through providing multiple solutions at various prices for the many decisions I had to make. John and his team demonstrated true professionalism at all times which resulted in a very successful project! I will absolutely use John’s services in the future and strongly recommend anyone considering a building project to meet him.
I’m writing to thank you for the wonderful work you did on the bathroom and kitchen remodels to our home. David and I really appreciate the quality of the craftsmanship, attention to detail and smooth construction process from start to finish. From my experience working the field of architecture, I believe that the level of service you provide is truly exceptional.
In addition to the quality of the work, it was also a wonderful experience to work with you and your sub-contractors, who are some of the nicest and most accommodating people we have ever worked with. Please give our thanks to Francisco, Vinnie and Jose.
As you know, it was really important for us to do some of the finish work ourselves to save money and contribute a bit of sweat to the project. We were grateful to you for not only letting us do as much as we could ourselves, but also for providing us with advice, tricks of the trade, and even a few tools. The kitchen counters that you and David cut and installed
together are beautiful and couldn’t have happened without your help, kindness and good nature.
If you ever need a reference, please don’t hesitate to give out my name. I would be delighted to tell people about our fantastic experience working with you and your crew.
All the best,
